Technically it took longer than seven years to build the subway, which was really just the span between the opening dates of the first and third segments of the Red Line. The subway actually began construction in September 1986 and opened as a 4-mile segment from Union Station to MacArthur Park in 1993. Subsequent segments took less time to build, mainly because there were less curves, relatively less surface construction impact and more contractor experience during the building of the latter segments.
