I'm struggling with the Aliso switch to sycamore from alder. What troubles me is that California has both alders and sycamores crowing along creeks. If there were only one of the two, you could think of the meaning as "riparian tree" But because we have two, clearly unrelated, riparian trees, generalizing the two under the same name seems really confusing. Europe has both alder and sycamore trees, so it was not a new problem upon arrival in the New World.


I really enjoyed reading about the origins and history of " El Aliso".
