Street art in downtown Las Vegas I Photo: Paint This Desert
There’s not enough wall space to install a mural that would express my gratitude to Creative Capital / Warhol Foundation, the national initiative to advance “the broad spectrum” of writing on contemporary art. That support includes blogs, and as some of you may know, I was selected as a recipient of an Arts Writers grant to create a site that will use Las Vegas as a jumping off point to survey and advocate for murals and street art in the region. And as the Foundation wrote in the December release, I will continue to “examine the intersections of public art, online media, and culture in western communities.”
Paint This Desert will look closely at these mediums’ direct relationship to public art. The blog will be an extension of Fuentes’s previous blog, View from a Loft, and his writing for KCET.org, and will report on public art through writing, photography, and documentary work. It will connect two symbolic destinations—the Arts District of Los Angeles and the Arts District of Las Vegas—in the interest of enlarging our understanding of public art in the West.
