IN A VIDEO a Downtown resident who works with homeless activists is seen with knives on a downtown sidewalk waiting to be sold, only to have his inventory be confiscated by LAPD. In the raw video dated June 25, 2007 and obtained by view from a loft, LAPD Officer Deon Joseph asks for permission to take the knives to which the seller replies "I give you permission." Then the man identifies himself as "Billy Joe Shaw" while is packing away remaining inventory that was laid out on San Julian.
Just before this, the LAPD officer identifies him as a member of a homeless advocacy group while declaring "You're out here selling knives to people, man ...it makes no damn sense." Shaw responds, "I'm trying to make money, man."
Later in the clip, fresh boxes with individual knives are seen sitting alongside a bag filled bag with small knives as the camera scans the blue plastic tarp, Joesph is heard to day "I don't want you selling any more porno magazines, or anything, in my blocks"
Shaw was given a citation, but was not arrested for that incident.
This footage is an another use of a camera to document, and sometimes the finished product is presented with strategic timing
that rivals a studio blockbuster release.
